Smart TV home screen with streaming apps

A Smart TV that takes ages to open apps, freezes on YouTube or keeps returning to the home screen is frustrating – but in most cases nothing is broken. Smart TVs are small computers with limited memory and storage, and they slow down for the same reasons phones do. Work through these fixes in order.

Nine fixes, from quickest to most thorough

  1. Restart properly. Turning off with the remote often only puts the TV in standby. Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds instead. This clears the memory completely.
  2. Check your internet speed. Run a speed test on your phone next to the TV. Streaming in HD needs a steady connection; if the phone is also slow, restart the router.
  3. Move the router or use a cable. Walls and distance weaken Wi-Fi. A LAN cable to the TV, if it has a port, removes Wi-Fi problems entirely.
  4. Clear the app's cache. On Android TV / Google TV: Settings → Apps → select the app → Clear cache. Do this for the app that misbehaves.
  5. Free up storage. Uninstall apps you never use. When storage is nearly full, the whole TV slows down.
  6. Update the TV software. Settings → Device Preferences / System → About → System update. Updates often fix bugs that cause crashes.
  7. Update the apps. Open the Play Store on the TV and update all apps.
  8. Turn off unused features. Disable automatic background app updates during viewing hours, and turn off screen savers you do not need.
  9. Factory reset as a last step. This erases all apps and logins, so note your passwords first. It returns the TV to its original speed if the problem was software.

Tip: Exact menu names differ by brand (Mi, OnePlus, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS), but the same options exist in the settings.

When it is not a software problem

If the TV is still slow after a factory reset, keeps restarting on its own, or gets stuck on the boot logo, the cause may be hardware – the internal storage chip or the main board. These faults need a technician. Our Smart TV repair service diagnoses these at home.

Why Smart TVs slow down

Most budget and mid-range Smart TVs have 1.5–2 GB of memory and 8–16 GB of storage. Every app update adds features and size, while the hardware stays the same. Over two or three years, the apps outgrow the TV. Cached data from YouTube and other streaming apps also builds up quietly in the background. This is why a TV that felt fast when new can feel sluggish later, even though nothing is broken.

Is a streaming stick a better option?

If your TV's picture and sound are still excellent but the smart features are slow even after a factory reset, an external streaming device (such as a Fire TV Stick, Chromecast with Google TV or similar) plugged into HDMI can be a practical upgrade. It costs far less than a new TV and gets regular app updates. You keep using the TV's panel – only the 'brain' changes.

Tip: If the TV restarts by itself, freezes on the logo, or loses settings every time it is switched off, a streaming stick will not solve it – these are hardware faults that need diagnosis.

Please do not open the television yourself. Power boards can hold a charge even when unplugged, so internal checks should be left to a trained technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Smart TV get slower over time?

Apps get bigger with every update, storage fills up, and cached data builds up. Clearing cache, removing unused apps and updating the software usually restores speed.

Will a factory reset delete my apps?

Yes. It removes all installed apps, accounts and settings. You will need to sign in again to YouTube, Netflix and other apps.

My Smart TV is stuck on the logo. Can I fix it myself?

Try a 60-second power reset once. If it still sticks, it usually needs a software re-flash or main board check by a technician.
