TV Problem Guide

TV Not Turning On

A television that will not start is most often a power supply problem rather than a failed panel — which is good news, because supply repairs are usually the least expensive category of TV work.

Symptoms you may notice

  • No standby light at all
  • Standby light on, but the set never starts
  • Standby light blinking in a repeating pattern
  • A click from inside the set with no picture
  • TV starts only after several attempts

Possible causes

Failed supply components

Ageing capacitors or a failed switching component prevent the board from producing the rails needed to start.

Protection mode

The set detects an abnormal current or voltage and refuses to start; the blink pattern often indicates which section triggered it.

Mains and surge damage

Voltage fluctuation and lightning-related surges are a frequent cause, especially where no stabiliser is used.

Mainboard start-up failure

Less common, but a mainboard that never issues the power-on command produces exactly the same symptom.

What a technician checks

  • Wall socket voltage and continuity of the power cable
  • Standby rail present or missing
  • Blink code interpretation for the specific model
  • Load test on each supply rail
  • Visual inspection for burnt or bulged components

Safe checks you can do first

  • Unplug for two minutes, then hold the TV's power button for 10 seconds before reconnecting
  • Test the socket with another appliance
  • Remove any extension board and plug directly into the wall
  • Remove the batteries from the remote and try the TV's own button

How the service works

Book a visit, describe the symptom, and a technician inspects the television at your home. The fault is explained in plain language, the cost is quoted before work starts, and the repair proceeds only after you approve it.

Please do not open the television or work on internal boards yourself. Panels and power supplies can hold a charge even when unplugged, so internal checks should be left to a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

It usually means the set detected a fault and stopped the start-up sequence. The number of blinks is model-specific and helps the technician narrow the section at fault.
