TV Problem Guide

TV HDMI and Input Problems

HDMI complaints are worth checking carefully before any repair, because a cable, a source device or a handshake setting is at fault at least as often as the port itself.

Symptoms you may notice

  • "No signal" on one or all HDMI inputs
  • Set-top box or console not detected
  • Picture appears then drops out repeatedly
  • Sound but no video, or video but no sound
  • Input works only after unplugging and reconnecting

Possible causes

Cable and connector wear

Loose or damaged HDMI cables are the single most common cause, particularly on ports used daily.

HDCP handshake failure

Copy-protection negotiation fails after an update or power cut, so protected content will not display.

Damaged HDMI port

Repeated plugging or a sideways knock can break solder joints at the port, causing intermittent detection.

Input board or mainboard fault

Where all inputs fail together, the fault is usually upstream of the ports themselves.

What a technician checks

  • Each input tested with a known-good cable and source
  • Port physical condition and solder joints
  • HDCP and CEC behaviour with devices isolated
  • Firmware version on TV and source
  • Input board signals where required

Safe checks you can do first

  • Power everything off for a minute, then power the TV on first and the source second
  • Swap the cable and try a different port
  • Turn CEC/device control off temporarily to test

How the service works

Book a visit, describe the symptom, and a technician inspects the television at your home. The fault is explained in plain language, the cost is quoted before work starts, and the repair proceeds only after you approve it.

Please do not open the television or work on internal boards yourself. Panels and power supplies can hold a charge even when unplugged, so internal checks should be left to a technician.
